1987-88 Twenty-five years

“Please God, don’t let Millwall win promotion” ran a famous Daily Mirror headline following the FA Cup tie between Arsenal and the Lions in January 1988. So imagine the consternation in the British press when we did – just four months’ later…

It’s an anniversary that’s passing with little attention from the club, but the ‘Battle of Highbury’ came halfway through the greatest ever achievement by a Millwall side when we won the Second Division championship and SO achieved promotion to the top flight for two roller-coaster seasons. Campaigns incidentally when we briefly topped the league -both times. Even now, it seems incredible that up to February 1989, the Lions were in the race to win the league title.

Of course it all crashed and burned with us being relegated in 1989 – not to return since. But that my friends is Millwall – and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

So to celebrate manager John Docherty’s place in Millwall history, along with such names as Tony Cascarino, Teddy Sheringham, Terry Hurlock and Les Briley we produced this giveaway magazine listing every match report from that glorious campaign. It’s laid out in booklet style. So print double sided with the flip side up – or its equivalent on your system -fold down the spine and staple and its yours. On us. Memories that seem like only yesterday – and maybe always will. Download the giveaway magazine here. (It may take a minute or two, but it’s worth it).

I left my heart at Cold Blow Lane…
